Healthy Deviant meal trick: pimp your ramen 🍜

I generally steer people away from noodle-based dishes because so many of them are just way too high in refined carbohydrates and way too low in nutritional value. When noodles are eaten without much else, they tend to turn to sugar rather rapidly causing blood sugar crashes and serious cravings a little while later.

That said, sometimes noodles are what you want, or they are pretty much all you have on hand. And in those moments when you are leaning toward noodles, I have one piece of advice for you: Do NOT do what most people do, namely dumping a packet of ramen noodles (plus that those mystery oils and flavoring packets) into plain water and calling it good (which it typically is not).

Instead, in a slightly bigger pan, heat up some prepared chicken or veggie broth (I keep boxes of both as pantry staples).

Chop and add a couple handfuls of whatever vegetables you have on hand. Carrots and celery are a good start, but I will throw in anything that hasn’t entirely gone bad in my veggie drawer — here I used a couple of radishes.

Toss in some protein : meat, egg, or in this case tofu (not normally my jam, but it was leftover from something else, so in it went).

Simmer a bit, then add the noodles.

Toss the included oil packet in the trash. It’s probably industrial soybean oil. Instead, add a tablespoon or so of your preferred oil (olive, avocado, coconut can all work well).

Cook ‘til noodles and veggies are reasonably soft. Then you can add some tamari, coconut aminos, OR the included seasoning packet, IF the ingredients look decent (avoid packets with MSG or ingredients that you don’t recognize as real), plus whatever additional spices or seasonings you like.

Dump it all in a bowl, and add some fresh herbs if you have them (I used cilantro here, but parsley, mint, basil are all good).

Just before serving, you can add some sriracha, and a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime is nice. I also like to drizzle some toasted sesame oil or lemon-flavored olive oil on top.

And there you go — a hearty, fresh tasting, satisfying meal that’s nice enough to share with guests. As long as your guests aren’t too picky. 🙂

Ah! The joy of a simple radish. Fresh, crisp, and just a little spicy! Humble radishes — topped with soft butter and a sprinkle of sea salt and fresh ground pepper — remain one of my all-time favorite snacks. ⁠

Simple enough to enjoy with a mocktail or glass of wine right after a hard day’s work. Elegant enough to serve to guests. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

I made up a new mocktail last week — I’m calling it the Mango Mint Chili Mojito — and it was fabulous enough that I thought I’d share. ⁠

Mash up (muddle) a small handful of fresh mint leaves in the bottom of a tall glass, add ice cubes or some crushed ice.⁠
⁠
Fill glass a third with @synergykombucha Peach Paradise Kombucha.⁠
⁠
Add a generous splash of organic mango or peach juice.⁠
⁠
Fill glass with sparkling water (I used LaCroix Mango flavor).⁠
⁠
Top with a generous squeeze of fresh lime. ⁠
⁠
Add a shake or two of of Trader Joe’s or similar Chili Lime Spice blend (if you’re ambitious, you could also coat the rim of the glass with spice, as you would with a margarita or bloody mary).⁠

Stir with a stemmed mint sprig and leave it in the glass as a garnish. ⁠
⁠
Festive, yummy, and so summery! ⁠

Sometimes people ask me for “just the quick top

Sometimes people ask me for “just the quick top tips” from my book. And I never know quite how to respond...⁠

I spell out my book’s central ideas in a very clear way in the intro and first chapter (both available in the free preview in my bio).⁠

But the friction I feel when asked for a quick “just the tips” summary of my book isn’t really about that. It’s about the too-busy mindset that has so many of us desperately seeking quick tips and shortcuts (most of which we will never follow) before we even understand the problem we are trying to solve.⁠

People THINK they want do-this-not-that summaries, listicles, bullets, quick explanations, instant solutions. And they sure sell like hotcakes. ⁠
⁠
As one literary agent explained to me when I was pitching my book, “People want pain pills, not vitamins” (much less real food, I gathered). But the problems we all face are not going to be solved by pain pills — or by endless listicles, bullet points, and instant solutions.⁠
⁠
In my view, the most pressing problem we all share is this: Our most basic human needs are not being met during the course of our so-called normal daily lives. ⁠
⁠
THAT’s the problem my book sets out to solve. THAT’s the challenge my programs aim to help people meet.⁠
⁠
Yes, there are plenty of bullets, and lists, and even some shockingly simple tips and tricks in my book. But there is no shortcut to fully understanding this misunderstood problem, or to embracing what I call “the renegade solution” of Healthy Deviance.⁠

You can spend years and vast fortunes chasing down quick-and-easy solutions that promise quick transformation … without ever making any significant difference in how you feel or function. ⁠

If I appear rather pleased with myself in this picture from last spring, it’s because I had successfully gotten myself to Paris for the first time in a long time, AND rented a pretty sweet apartment for me and some friends. ⁠

I had arrived first, and instead of going out to explore the city, I decided to just soak in the delights of having a Parisian apartment all to myself for a couple of hours. ⁠
⁠
In poking around the place, I discovered (among other cool things) a tiny piano and some vintage hats. So you know what I did? I just goofed around! ⁠
⁠
I played the piano a little (something I haven’t done since I was a kid) and tried on the old hats just for fun. I read part of a French book, only about half of which I understood. And from the window, I watched fashionably dressed bike commuters go by on their way home from work. It was a blast! ⁠
⁠
Since becoming a grownup, I don’t kick back and do things just for fun anywhere near enough. But when I do, I often discover that I still know how to show myself a pretty good time. My creativity and imagination and goofiness all come out to play.⁠
⁠
I like that about myself. It’s good to know some things that you like about yourself — particularly when you live in the Unhealthy Default Reality, which mostly tries to point out all the things that are supposedly inadequate and “wrong” about you. ⁠
⁠
